How to filter articles in Analyze

Narrow hundreds of articles down to the ones you need using Article Details and Keywords.

Written by Nathan

Analyze has two filters on the left of the screen: Keywords and Article Details. You can use one or both, and the chart updates as you go.

How do I filter by article details?

  1. Click Article Details to open it.

  2. Set any of these filters:

    • Publication Date: type a start and end year, for example 2015 to 2026

    • Open Access: switch the toggle on to show only articles you can read for free

    • SJR Quartiles: pick Q1, Q2, Q3 or Q4 to filter by journal ranking. Q1 is the top 25% of journals in a field.

    • H-index: set a minimum and maximum H-index to change which articles you see

    • Retractions: leave it on Don’t filter, choose Remove retracted to hide retracted articles, or choose Only retracted to see them on their own

  3. The articles that match are highlighted on the chart, and the rest fade to light grey.

The number next to Article Details shows how many of these filters are active. Click the X next to a date or H-index range to clear it.

How do I filter by keywords?

  1. Click Keywords to open it.

  2. Type a word or phrase into Add keywords... and press Enter.

  3. Your keyword appears with a colored dot, and the articles that match are highlighted on the chart.

  4. Add more keywords to build up your filter. Click the X next to a keyword to remove it.

Suggested Keywords

Suggested Keywords are themes ResearchRabbit spots across your search, such as oxidative stress or depressive disorder. They’re a good place to start if you’re not sure which keywords to try.

Click a theme to add it to your Keywords. It turns black to show it’s selected. To remove it, click the X next to it in your Keywords list.

How do And, Or and Not work?

Each keyword has a dropdown that lets you choose how it combines with the others:

  • And: articles must contain both keywords

  • Or: articles can contain either keyword

  • Not: leaves out articles containing that keyword

For example, oxidative stress Or major depression shows articles about either topic. Adding inflammation with And under oxidative stress narrows that group to articles mentioning both.

Can I use both filters at once?

Yes. When you use both, Combined Filters at the top of the chart shows how many articles match everything you’ve set. Click it to see only those articles, in dark blue.

Explore your matching articles

  1. Check Combined Filters at the top of the chart. This is how many articles match everything you’ve set.

  2. Click Explore matching articles at the bottom of the left-hand panel. The button shows how many it will open.

  3. Your matching articles open as a new branch of your Search Journey, labelled with your filters. Your Journey Home Base Map stays right where you left it.

  4. Click the circle on any paper you want to keep. Use Show more to load more papers.

  5. Click Merge to add your picks to your search as Seeds.

💡 Tip: Too many matches? Add a Publication Date range or an SJR Quartile to trim the list. Use Not to leave out a theme you’ve already covered.
